2018 Parents’ Book Club: The Strength of Fragility

For years, the Parents' Book Club has invited many a renowned lecturer to present to them on the topics of education and life. In the last semester, the High school guidance office invited the teacher from Hsinchu City Family Education Center - Ms.Hou Feiyuan - to discuss the fragility of human nature and parental confusion. Ms. Hou spoke of the declining social atmosphere, revealing to her audience the prevalence of cutthroat competitors with weak wills. The universal mode of thinking has made us accustomed to demanding answers without pondering why we ask these questions. She spoke concernedly of children losing their enthusiasm for learning within the competitive education system; although they know how to achieve good grades, they don't know how to apply the knowledge they gain; although they know how to succeed, they don't know how to accept failure; although they know how to attend school, they quickly lose the spirit of exploring and enriching their lives. Through reading, parents can affirm \fundamental values. By reminding each other to embrace the diversity of thought, taking a serious look at everything in life, accompanying children to face the uncertain future empathy, rationally discussing public issues, they will help students develop a worldly philosophy of confidence without worldly success. And a smidge of courage, tolerance, patience, and reassurance is all it takes.

Elementary Department’s Mathematics Base Plan Wins “Model School”

Since 2013, the Elementary Department has implemented its Math Spotlight Foundation Plan, creating vivid math lessons and striving to increase the quality of education and interactions between teachers and students. Through open-class and discussion lessons, teachers began to better understand students’ process of learning and started to devise diverse lessons that target many students' learning blind spots. The Elementary Department sent teachers to attend the semi-annual seminar, the team led by Dean Ms. Lai, Ms. Yang, Ms. Chou, and Ms. Huang to participate in the standard evaluation. A few teachers’ steady speeches, clear articulation, and professional and engaging subjects not only awarded our school yet the sixth “first-rated starred recognition, but also stimulated professional team startups. Congratulations to the Elementary Department, and thank you to those behind the Math Spotlight Foundation Plan!

IBSH Winter Concert

At the end of each year, IBSH’s Winter Concert sets its stage at NEHS. Under the creativity and dexterity of IBSH parents, the old gym transforms from its original appearance into a Christmas-festive venue. This year’s Winter Concert revolved around the theme of evolution, and every program expressed its features through different interpretations of it. The performers encompassed students from grade one to twelve, with grade one to eight performing by class and grade nine to twelve performing by groups and clubs. Programs encompass singing, dancing, musical drama, and orchestra performance. These performances were fascinating, and they brought up the excitement and appreciation of Christmas season.

Bilingual Department character education activities

The IBSH elementary department held a “character education” activity in November of 2018 with the theme as self-control. Splitting every grade as a unit, grade one to six students attended the activities within each station such as learning to calm down and meditate; challenge themselves to hold still like a statue in a silly pose for 45 seconds; or use a tiny teaspoon to transport as much water as they could to the other side. These activities may seem easy and simple, but it trains students to recognize their own behavior and concentrate and learn from these activities.
