36th NEHS Field Day

The 36th annual NEHS Field Day commenced earlier this school year on Saturday, November 10th. Fortunately for the athletes and spectators, the weather was fair, which established a lighthearted and encouraging spirit to the event as a whole. The opening ceremony was crafted meticulously and reflected on the creativity and intellectual abilities of the kindergarten, elementary, middle school, high school, and bilingual department. Each class expressed their unique styles, and their displays of class spirit served as an exemplary beginning to the 2018 Field Day. Once all 5 departments finished marching onto the field, Principal Mr. Roger Lee thanked the previous PTA chair Mr. Ku for his hard work with a few words and conducted the inauguration of Mr. Huang, the current PTA chair. Said inauguration marked the end of the opening ceremony, and the bilingual department (IBSH) high schoolers and the IBSH cheerleading team respectively performed the power-dance and cheer routines, both of which were extremely successful as the result of their collective hard work. The 5th and 6th grade 100 meter finals and the middle and high school track finals, along with the kindergarten and elementary fun games, soon also took place following the IBSH performances. NEHS faculty, parent representatives, and alumni ran the 1900 meter relay during lunch, and their combined efforts were noted by all spectators. Excited applause and cheering could be heard from miles away. Immediately after was the staff games, and then the highlight of the day: the middle and high school 2000m and 2400m class relays. Each class was represented well, with all athletes giving it their all, and such marked a perfect conclusion to the 36th annual field day!

Guidance Office Parental Education Lectures

Recent years, middle and high school guidance counselors have found that many parents have trouble communicating with their children about relationships, the boundaries of physical contacts, and the limiting use of electronic devices. In order to address these problems, the guidance office has hosted three lectures this semester, providing concepts and advice in regards to communication, hoping that they can promote good parental and child relationship.

The first lecture was spoken by investigator Jing-Ru Chi of Taiwan Shilin District Court, who shared her thoughts on how to communicate with children about relationships and physical contacts. By describing the cases she has dealt with, parents were able to understand the relationship problems that children may encounter, and were reminded that parents should avidly communicate and foster correct world value for their children.

For the second lecture, the guidance office invited Doctor Li, the author of 《上網不上癮》, to share his knowledge of teenager’s addiction on the internet. He mentioned the 3R strategy: Role—be the role model and decrease the time on electronic device usage; Real—build the interest of your child towards the real world; Rule—regulate your child’s use of electronic devices and accompany their growth in self discipline.

For the third lecture, the dean of the Ma Da Yuan Clinic came to share about the art of parent and child communication. He began by explaining the function of the brain, giving parents a sense of how children think. When communicating with children, parents have to first understand their emotions and thoughts, then discuss what they should do. The best attitude is to be calm but firm, nice but strict. Special thanks to the parents for their participation and acknowledgements on these lectures, and please look forward to future parental lectures held by the guidance office.

UNICEF Events

Every year, IBSH hosts UNICEF activities, donating money to children around the world. UNICEF helps The United Nations Children's Fund by hosting Humanism and Development aid to women and children in developing nations. This year, the UNICEF activity started on October 26th. By using the self-raised fundraising method, UNICEF collaborated with INTERACT to organize walk-a-thon. This activity not only helped students maintain their health condition, but also entertained them by walking/running more laps to donate money to people in need. There was another activity on the same day, UNICEF Carnival, where students celebrated Halloween by having costume competition, selling foods and drinks, and hosting games. This event allowed the students to celebrate Halloween and, at the same time, participate in fundraising events to help out children who are in need.

Make friends with the World

Not only has our school expanded its breadth of global education through trips abroad and the SIEP agenda, its host of visiting international schools also fosters self improvement and reflection that give much credit to NEHS. This year, as always, NEHS welcomed Japan’s Super Science High School (SSH), with H205 hosting Fukushima High School . H204 hosting Funabashi High School, and H206 hosting Wakimachi High School. The visitors presented their highly anticipated scientific research and deeply engaged with NEHS students, whether on discussions of culture, competitions, or daily lives. Though their English may not always be fluent, their evident improvement from previous years and full effort in presenting in English, both verbally and on posters, show excellent attitudes of learning. The conflation of cultural, language, and scientific exchange undoubtedly inspired both the Taiwanese and Japanese students, marking yet another valuable experience for all.
